An Eighty-five-year Harvard Qualitative Study on relationships conducted by Waldinger and Schultz supported those strong supportive relationships fostered overall well-being and resilience in both adults and adolescents. The study found the lack of strong relationship increased suicide ideation and premature death from all causes by 50% as well increased mental and emotional disorders. Overall, the study concluded that by having good dependable connections and healthy relationships can improve mental and physical health and increase productivity and longevity. Another study conducted by the NIH concluded that insecure attachment is relevant to adolescent suicidal behavior because it is associated with relationship dysfunction.
In another study, Detroit is described as a city leading the nation with one of the highest rates for high school dropouts and sex-trafficking partially due to a lack of supportive environments and relationships.
Higher Heights Development Center is geared and equipped to address the blight of our communities. We endeavor to close the cracks in the family ecosystems that allow children and youth to slip through, leaving them vulnerable to the plagues of society such as human trafficking, homelessness, drugs, mental/emotional deterioration, suicidal ideation, under-educated and under-prepared for job readiness due to a lack of stability, and consistent sound supportive parental and adult relationships.
Our programs are designed to improve the quality of life for youth, adults, and families in the Metropolitan Detroit area.
The Center’s objectives are to lessen or eradicate mental distortions that lead to depression, suicide ideations, disruptive behaviors, divorce, domestic violence, broken homes and broken families.
The primary goals are to:
*Establish healthy self-identity, improve self-efficacy and productivity by changing negative mental ideations, promoting healing of past traumas, and regulating emotions.
*Teach relationship skills and the art of communication to lessen the divorce rate, promote stability in families, and decrease homelessness among adolescents.
·*Promote enthusiasm for higher education, lessen the dropout rate, teach job readiness, remove agency dependency.
* Develop parenting skills to reduce issues of child abuse, neglect, and abandonment.
*Build stronger communities by permanently changing the minds and the lives of those it serves.
Ultimately, we aspire to ensure that no child or young person falls through the cracks and becomes a victim of society's plagues.
With unwavering commitment, we strive to provide programs that will protect and uplift the most vulnerable members of our community.
